About the OI Crossover Scanner

The scanner tracks the moment total put open interest crosses above (or below) total call open interest. One of the cleanest directional signals NSE produces. When puts cross above calls, institutional writers are defending lower strikes with increasing conviction and the underlying is moving into a bullish regime. When calls cross above puts, the ceiling is getting heavier. The dashboard surfaces every active crossover across Nifty, BankNifty, FinNifty, Sensex, and all F&O stocks.

Crossovers are most tradeable when price agrees with the OI direction. A put-over-call crossover on Nifty during a multi-week resistance break is a much stronger signal than one during a listless consolidation. The scanner shows each crossover with current trend, PCR, and recent OI flow so you can judge conviction quickly. Stocks often show cleaner crossovers than indices because their OI is less diffuse. RELIANCE, ICICIBANK, HDFCBANK and the heavyweight private banks are usually where the cleanest signals fire.

How to trade OI crossovers

Directional traders want a fresh put-over-call crossover combined with rising spot. That's a high-conviction long setup. The institutional commitment visible in OI is the fuel that makes trends last. Option sellers use crossovers to pick which side to write. Sell OTM puts after a put-over-call crossover (put OI zone will likely hold). Sell OTM calls after a call-over-put crossover. Avoid trading choppy crossovers where the lines oscillate. Those are signal-less range conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an OI crossover, in plain English?

It's the moment total put open interest crosses above (or below) total call open interest on a given symbol. Most days that line stays on one side. The minutes when it flips are usually when something has actually changed in positioning. Traders treat the crossover itself as the signal, not the absolute levels.

Why does a put-over-call crossover matter for Nifty?

Puts crossing above calls means writers are committing fresh capital to defend lower strikes. On Nifty that has historically lined up well with the start of multi-day rallies. The April 2024 election rally, the post-COVID March 2020 lows, and several earnings-driven moves in BankNifty all started with a clean OI crossover within the first hour of trade.

How is this different from a simple PCR reading?

PCR tells you the current ratio. The crossover tells you when the ratio actually flipped sides. A PCR of 1.05 today versus 0.95 yesterday is the kind of move that hides in noise unless you're watching the OI lines themselves. The scanner highlights the exact session and bar where the cross happened so you don't have to eyeball it.

Are individual stock crossovers more reliable than indices?

Often, yes. Stock OI is concentrated in fewer strikes, so the lines move with cleaner direction. RELIANCE, ICICIBANK, HDFCBANK, and the heavyweight private banks tend to give the cleanest crossovers. Mid-cap F&O stocks can be noisy because their OI is thinner and a single fund's positioning shows up as a false flip.

Should I trade every crossover the scanner flags?

No. Crossovers in choppy ranges are noise. The actionable ones happen alongside price confirmation: a put-over-call cross while spot is breaking above prior resistance, or a call-over-put cross while spot is breaking down. The scanner shows the price context next to each flagged event for exactly this reason.

How quickly does the scanner pick up a new crossover?

The scanner runs on the same NSE option chain feed the live tools use. New crossovers appear within seconds of the OI data updating, which is roughly every 1 to 3 seconds during market hours. There's no manual refresh needed.

How to use the OI Crossover Scanner

  1. Open the scannerLand on the OI Crossover page during market hours. The dashboard auto-populates with every fresh crossover from the current session.
  2. Filter by symbol or sectorNarrow to the names you actually trade. Most retail traders watch Nifty, BankNifty, FinNifty, plus a handful of stocks.
  3. Read the direction tagEach row is tagged bullish (put OI crossed above call OI) or bearish (call OI crossed above put OI). The colour coding makes scanning fast.
  4. Cross-check with spot priceClick a row to see the chart. Strong setups have OI direction and spot direction agreeing in the same window.
  5. Set your conviction thresholdTreat early-session crossovers (before 10:30 IST) as higher-conviction since they capture institutional positioning. Late-day flips are usually unwinds, not fresh commitment.
