Nifty, Bank Nifty and Sensex Lot Size and Expiry Day

The Nifty 50 lot size is 65 units and one Bank Nifty lot is 30 units. On BSE, a Sensex lot is 20 units. Figures cover the Oct, Nov and Dec 2026 contracts, as on . Here is every index you can trade in F&O right now:

Index F&O lot sizes and expiry days for the Oct, Nov and Dec 2026 contracts
IndexLot sizeExpiry
Nifty 50 (NIFTY)65Weekly, every Tuesday
Bank Nifty (BANKNIFTY)30Monthly, last Tuesday
Sensex (SENSEX)20Weekly, every Thursday
Bankex (BANKEX)30Monthly, last Thursday
Fin Nifty (FINNIFTY)60Monthly, last Tuesday
Midcap Nifty (MIDCPNIFTY)120Monthly, last Tuesday
Nifty Next 50 (NIFTYNXT50)25Monthly, last Tuesday
Sensex 50 (SENSEX50)75Monthly, last Thursday
Nifty FPI 150 (NIFTYFPI)1,100Monthly, last Tuesday

Across all 213 F&O stocks, lot sizes run from 20 shares for PAGEIND to 71,475 shares for IDEA. The gap is deliberate: every contract is sized to a similar rupee value, so the pricier the share, the smaller its lot. BAJAJHLDNG, IEX and IREDA have no Dec 2026 contract, which is what a stock leaving the F&O segment looks like: no new months get added and the listed ones run until expiry.

What Lot Size Means for Your Trade

A lot is the smallest block you can buy or sell in futures and options. Your order quantity has to be a whole multiple of it: with a lot size of 500 you can trade 500, 1,000 or 1,500 shares, but never 700. Brokers usually ask you to enter the number of lots, and the quantity follows from it.

Lot size, contract value and margin

Contract value is the price multiplied by the lot size. Buying an option costs the premium times the lot size, and that premium is the most you can lose. A futures position, or a sold option, carries the full contract value as exposure, but the broker only blocks a margin, which is a fraction of it. That leverage is why the lot size matters before you place an order: it fixes both the money you need and how much each point of movement is worth to you.

How lot sizes are set and revised

SEBI sets a value band and the exchanges work backwards from the price. An index contract has to be worth at least ₹15 lakh when it is introduced, and at each review its lot is set so one contract is worth ₹15 lakh to ₹20 lakh. For stock contracts the band is ₹5 lakh to ₹10 lakh. An underlying also has the same lot size on every exchange, so a stock's lot is identical on NSE and BSE.

Reviews happen every six months. NSE takes the average closing price of March or September, announces the new lots at the end of that month with at least two weeks' notice, and they take effect the day after the next monthly expiry. Cuts where the new lot divides the old one evenly apply to every contract at once. Increases, and cuts that don't divide evenly, start with the newly listed far month while nearer months keep the old lot until they expire. That is why one symbol can show two lot sizes in this table for a couple of months.

Corporate actions change lot sizes too. After a stock split or bonus issue the exchange adjusts the lot size and strikes of the existing contracts so the position value stays the same. To see what a given lot size means for a real trade, build the position in the Strategy Builder, which works out payoff and margin with these lot sizes, or check live premiums in the Option Chain.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the lot size of Nifty 50?

The Nifty 50 lot size is 65 units for the Oct, Nov and Dec 2026 contracts (as on 5 Oct 2026). Nifty futures and options, weekly and monthly, all use this lot size. Nifty 50 options expire every Tuesday.

What is the Bank Nifty lot size?

One Bank Nifty lot is 30 units for the Oct, Nov and Dec 2026 contracts (as on 5 Oct 2026). Bank Nifty has monthly contracts only, expiring on the last Tuesday of the month. A Bank Nifty option at ₹300 costs 300 × 30 = ₹9,000 per lot.

What is the Sensex lot size?

Sensex derivatives trade on BSE with a lot size of 20 units for the Oct, Nov and Dec 2026 contracts (as on 5 Oct 2026). Sensex options expire every Thursday. One lot of a Sensex option at ₹200 costs 200 × 20 = ₹4,000.

How much money do I need to trade 1 lot of Nifty?

To buy one lot of a Nifty option you pay the premium times the lot size: at a premium of ₹100 that is 100 × 65 = ₹6,500, and it is also the most you can lose. Selling options or trading Nifty futures needs margin instead. Margin is a share of the contract value (the Nifty futures price × 65) and moves with volatility, so check the exact figure in your broker's margin calculator or StockMojo's Strategy Builder before you place the trade.

When do Nifty, Bank Nifty and Sensex options expire?

Weekly options are available on Nifty 50 (every Tuesday) and Sensex (every Thursday). Bank Nifty, Fin Nifty, Midcap Nifty, Nifty Next 50 and Nifty FPI 150 have monthly contracts expiring on the last Tuesday of the month, while Bankex and Sensex 50 have monthly contracts expiring on the last Thursday of the month. When the expiry day is a market holiday, the contract expires on the previous trading day instead.

Which F&O stock has the biggest lot size?

IDEA (VODAFONE IDEA) has the largest lot at 71,475 shares and PAGEIND (PAGE INDUSTRIES) the smallest at 20 shares (as on 5 Oct 2026). Lot sizes move opposite to the share price because every contract is sized to a similar rupee value, so a low-priced stock needs a big lot and an expensive one a small lot.

What is lot size in F&O trading?

Lot size is the fixed number of units in one futures or options contract. You can't trade a single unit of a Nifty option or a single share of a stock future: every order has to be a whole number of lots. If a stock's lot size is 500, one lot of its call option covers 500 shares, two lots cover 1,000 and so on. The exchange sets one lot size per underlying, and its futures and options both use it.

How does NSE decide the lot size?

SEBI sets a value band and the exchange works backwards from the price. An index contract has to be worth at least ₹15 lakh when it's introduced, and at every review its lot is set so one contract is worth ₹15 lakh to ₹20 lakh. For stock contracts the band is ₹5 lakh to ₹10 lakh. The exchange divides that target by the average closing price of the past month and rounds to a permitted step, which is why expensive stocks have small lots and cheap ones have big lots.

How often do F&O lot sizes change?

Every six months. NSE reviews lot sizes using the average closing price of March and of September, announces the new lots at the end of that month with at least two weeks' notice, and they take effect the day after the next monthly expiry, at the end of April and the end of October. Splits, bonus issues and other corporate actions can change a stock's lot size in between.

When did the Nifty lot size change to 65?

NSE cut the Nifty lot size from 75 to 65 in its circular of 3 October 2025, based on September 2025 prices. Contracts expiring up to 30 December 2025 kept 75 units. The first weekly expiry with 65 units was 6 January 2026 and the first monthly expiry was 27 January 2026. In the same revision Bank Nifty went from 35 to 30, Fin Nifty from 65 to 60 and Midcap Nifty from 140 to 120.

What happens to my open position when the lot size changes?

Usually nothing you need to act on. An increase only applies to new far-month contracts, so positions in the nearer months keep their lot size until expiry. When a lot is cut to an exact fraction of the old one (say 1,000 to 500), every contract switches on the effective date and your quantity stays the same, it just counts as more lots. Splits and bonus issues adjust the lot size and strikes together so the position value doesn't change. Two things to check: your rollover quantity, because the next contract month may use a different lot size, and long-dated index contracts (quarterly and half-yearly), which switch to a revised index lot on a date named in the exchange circular.

Why does a stock show no contract for some months?

When NSE removes a stock from the F&O segment, it stops adding new contract months. The contracts already listed keep trading until they expire, so the later months show a dash in the table. A newly added stock works the other way: it starts with a full set of current, next and far month contracts.

Is the lot size the same for futures and options?

Yes. A stock or index uses one lot size for both its futures and its options in a given expiry, and SEBI requires the same lot size for an underlying on every exchange. Weekly and monthly index options in the same month share it too. The only time you'll see two values side by side is during a revision, when older contracts keep the old lot size until they expire and newer months carry the revised one.

What is the difference between lot size and freeze quantity?

Lot size is the smallest quantity you can order. Freeze quantity is the largest quantity the exchange accepts in a single order for that contract. Anything bigger is rejected, so brokers split large orders into smaller slices (often called iceberg or slice orders). NSE publishes the freeze limits for index contracts every month, separately from lot sizes.

Can I download the F&O lot size list in Excel?

Yes. The download button next to the search box exports the rows you're looking at as CSV or Excel, with the lot size for each contract month. Search for a symbol or company first if you only need part of the list.
